It would depend on if you are doing a "complete" oil change or if you just need to add some oil if it leaks. If doing a complete change, then you would put in 4.5 to 5 quarts. Otherwise, for leakage, you would add what it needs. My Volvo 240 (1986) has a very small and slow leak, so in my experience, anywhere from 1/4 quart to 1/2 quart is normal. Good luck!
The oil pan is bolted to the bottom of the engine
Not 100% sure about the '87, but there is no PCV valve on the 1986 Volvo 240 2.3L. Flame trap and Oil trap, but no PCV.
Open the OIL FILLER cap--on the top of the engine- and add oil.

5W-30 in warmer climates, 10W-30 in colder
Use only the weight recommended by Volvo and I doubt that they recommend 10w40.
The recommended oil grade is 10W/30.
Any good make of 10w-40 oil
Piston rings and/or (probably and) cylinder walls are damaged. Rebuild the engine.
10w30 is recomended.
