The 2.0 liter SOHC engine in the sedan and wagon take ( 3.8 litres / 4.0 U.S. quarts )
The 2.0 liter DOHC Zetec engine in the ZX2 takes ( 4.25 litres / 4.5 U.S. quarts )
5W-30
Take the dipstick out out put it through the small hole were the dipstick goes

its at the bottom of the tranni its a pain in the a** to change because you have to take out the whole tranni to fix or replace it.
$300 give or take $20 depending on where you take it.
Start with a quart and then check the dipstick.
You can use any SAE certified transmission fluid in your 1998 Ford escort manual transmission. Make sure the transmission fluid is for your manual transmission and not an automatic transmission.
Take the cap off the pump-it's a belt-driven accessory. The dipstick is under it.
take it to a mechanic and say, "can you replace the transmission mount on my '94 Ford Escort"
