Your 1976 sportster holds one quart of fluid. I use HD Sportlube or HD PRI ANDTRANS LUBE, but in the olden days I used a 20 wt non detergent motor oil. This fluid lubes the clutches and transmission gears and primary chain.
The purpose of a Harley sportster gas tank is to add capacity on how much this brand of motorcycle can hold. These sportster gas tanks are also to offer a more updated and slick design for those that really love their motorcycle fashions.
Just bought a Harley....what weight oil is recommend for this bike. Also, how many quarts does it hold?

Says in manual 3 quarts but that is too much. More like 2 and 1/2 quarts.
3 1/2 quarts
A person must maintain the fluid levels of a vehicle to keep it running well. The 1989 Corvette Manual transmission holds 3 quarts of transmission fluid.
You don't, it uses the same oil as the engine. WHOA! do NOT go by that last answer somebody left. Japanese bikes share the same oil in the engine and transmission. Harleys do NOT share engine oil with the transmission. Tranny oil must be checked and changed separately than from the engine. You must open the derby cover over the clutch to check and add transmission oil on a newer Sportster. Older Ironhead Sportsters have an inspection plug on the primary. have someone hold the bike straight up, you will get a false level on the kickstand. It uses 20-50wt motor oil OR HD primary oil. There's also a chain inside that primary that has to be adjusted regularly. Get a factory service manual.
