Mine idles at 69 and drops to 55. I too wondered about that.
they should fluctuate when your revving your engine and letting it down to idle that's the voltage regulator stopping the alternator from putting out to much power it is perfectly normal.

It sounds as if you may have the timing adjusted wrong. The car should idle at 850 rpm I believe. If you adjust the idle the car should use less gas.

what type of idle problem is it, in my old jeep grand cheroke i had a problem where you had to slightly press the throttle in order to stop the engine from stalling at idle. this problem was later found to be due to to much deposit on the electrodes of the battery. Another problem i had on my vw polo was when the ignition coil went on one of the cylinders. i do know that idle problems are mainly due to ignition faults unless you've burnt a bearing.
