Oil capacity for that is 3.5 quarts. If your doing an oil change, you'll only need 3 quarts as you cannot drain all the oil just by draining from the plug. Check your dipstick with bike on jiffy stand.
Primary is listed as 26 oz. I just changed mine last night and used about a quart and a half. Roughly 48 0z. Basically you want to fill the primary untill you see oil in the clutch inspection hole, I fill it untill it is touching the bottom of the pressure plate. This is done with the bike standing upright. NOT on jiffy stand.
Capacity for the trans is listed at 20-24 oz. I am thinking it may need more though. This you read off the dipstick. The fill plug/dipstick, don't thread it in just put it in until it rests on the threads. I remember checking mine like 20 times, it seemed hard to get a consistant reading. This is also done with bike standing upright.
24 ounces.
in the primary cover, you fool
I'm trying to change my oil on my 08 heritage softail. I located a drain plug under the bike but that doesn't seem to be it. I believe it is the transmission oil and now I have two problems. I would like to know how to add and check the transmission fluid and how and where to locate the oil drain plug. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The drain plug is located between the shocks.
You should only use Harley transmission fluid from the dealership. It's engineered by Harley for their transmissions.
AMSOIL 20W50. Don't overfill.
You remove the drain plugs. The transmission drain plug is located directly below the center of the transmission end cover on the right side of the bike and the primary chaincase drain plug is located directly below the center of the large, round clutch inspection (derby) cover.
through the clutch inspection cover. The Primary and transmission share fluid.
The primary cause of a transmission to experience hard shifting is low fluid. Fluid is the life of a transmission and operates most of its functions.
You remove the derby cover (the large round cover on the left side of the bike) and fill there.
harley has their own suggested fluid. however many of us use the same oil in the engine, the tranny and the primary. 20/50
