Mobile phones emit radiofrequency (RF) radiation, which is a type of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation. Non-ionizing radiation has lower frequency and lower energy than ionizing radiation, such as X-rays, and is therefore less likely to damage DNA or cells.

The RF radiation emitted by mobile phones is in the microwave range and is absorbed by the tissues in the head and body when the phone is used. Some people have expressed concern about the potential health effects of RF radiation from mobile phones, but the weight of scientific evidence to date does not suggest that the use of mobile phones poses a significant risk to human health.

They emit electro magnetic radiation in the microwave range and the highest current cellphone handset radiation dosage has been measured at 2 watts most being lower than this, although in the days of analogue mobile phones higher radiation dosage were then recorded.

The subject of effect on human health in using mobile phones remains controversial, with some contending the thermal and/or non thermal effects of the radiation can cause cancer or other illnesses. In the United Kingdom there have been public demonstations in some parts of the UK calling for banning of mobile phone transmission masts from school buildings because of their believed harmful effects on the health of children attending such schools.

But prolonged population studies in various countries have not in fact been able to find evidence proving any harmful effects on human health actually result. The longest such study following 420,000 mobile phone users in Denmark over a period of 20 years showed no increase in cancer rates affecting this sample population of the 4.3 Billion users of mobile phones in the world as a whole today, although some contend this is not conclusive enough to prove they are completely safe.

The Danish study's findings seems to have been further confirmed by shorter period studies in some other countries and no contradictory evidence has as yet been verified. The World Health Organisation has stated "there is no convincing evidence of any harmful effect on human health resulting from the electro magnetic waves emitted by cellphones".
