Yes, any 2.8 will fit in a transformer.
my guess would be theres no fluid in the tranny and it had been welded together. similar to what happened to mine when it ran out of fluid at 70 mph on the interstate. and yes, it was a 93 ford 5 speed ranger. remember to check fluids

The 1992 5-Speed DOES NOT have a dipstick. You have to remove a threaded plug on the drivers' side of the transmission to check the fluid level. Be careful, the Mazda 5-speed tranny is to be filled with Mercon ATF (automatic transmission fluid), not heavy gear lube. Fill with fluid until it begins to run out of the threaded plug hole.
According to the 2004 Ford Ranger Owner Guide : *** if you mean the standard ( or 5 speed manual transmission ) That takes approximately 2.65 litres / 2.8 U.S. quarts of Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid with the vehicle on a level surface
There are two plugs on the side of the transmission. Remove the lower plug to drain and refill in the upper plug. Also, this transmission uses automatic transmission fluid (ATF) not the heavy 90W oil that older models used.
There is a plug on the side of the tranny. take it out. If fluid runs out, put the plug back in the hole and get on with life. If no fluid runs out, check your manual for what transmission fluid to use. Fill it till it runs out at the plug a bit. Be sure to use the transmission fluid recommended for Chevy S10 5 speed manual transmissions.
