If there's any question about whether or not a drywall anchor will hold on the ceiling, the best thing to do would be to find a ceiling joist and use a long screw to go into solid wood. (Use a stud finder to locate the joist.) Hanging on a ceiling is more dangerous than hanging on a wall since things that fall can fall on people or pets.

If you HAVE to hang just in drywall, use the strongest anchor you can get (i.e. one that expands like a butterfly after insertion, or the type that flares out like a flower when you tighten it). Your local hardware store can help with what's a reasonable weight limit.

What does a a pulley change?

In a simple case of lifting a weight using a pulley, there are two ways to do it and two different results. First, attach a pulley to the ceiling, and a rope to the weight which is on the floor. Run the rope through the pulley. Now we simply pull down on the rope and the weight is lifted up. In the second case, we attach one end of the rope to the ceiling, the pulley to the weight, and pass the unattached end of the rope through the pulley. Now we have to pull the rope up, and the weight is lifted. Now let's look at each job and what happens. In the first case, pull the rope tight without lifting and hold the rope at the top, next to the pulley. If you now pull the rope all the way down to the floor, the weight goes all the way up to the ceiling. Note also that the tension in the rope is equal to the weight being lifted and that there is only one tensioned rope pulling the weight upwards. Passing over the pulley changes the direction of the tension in the rope but doesn't change it's pulling power. Pulling that rope from ceiling to floor is exactly the same as lifting the weight from floor to ceiling. In the second case, tighten the rope before lifting and hold the rope where it exits the pulley on the weight. Now pull and your hand moves from there to the ceiling - about the same distance (but the other way) as you moved your hand in the other case. However, notice now that the weight is only half way to the ceiling. It is hanging on a loop of rope, one side going to the hook and the other going to your hand. This suggests that the weight is shared by these two parts of the rope and therefore the tension in each piece only needs to be half the weight. Your hand is holding half the weight. The ceiling hook is still holding the other half. To finish the job, you will have to keep pulling more rope - all the rope which is still there from hook to weight pulley and back to your hand. That's the floor to ceiling distance. In the second case, you pull twice as much rope to finish the job. And because it takes twice as long, it only needs half the force at any stage.

Installing Drywall Over An Acoustic Ceiling?

If you are here reading this, chances are you are wanting to get rid of that old out dated look of your ceiling. Acoustic ceiling is also known as popcorn texture ceiling. If your home is older, scraping may not be an option since the ceiling could contain asbestos. So here is a guide to covering that old popcorn texture ceiling with drywall. Step 1. You will need a stud finder to find the ceiling joist. As you find each one, make sure you mark a tiny place on the wall so you know where it is. Step 2. Purchase up to a half inch thick drywall and enough to cover the are you are remodeling. Step 3. This is where you need help. Either find someone to help you hold the drywall up or rent a drywall jack. Be sure to stagger seams so you can avoid butting in all corners. The result of that could be cracking later on. Step 4. It is best to use drywall screws instead of nails. The reason for this is that screws provide better gripping and you need better gripping since it is going through 2 sheets of drywall. With the jack in place or even a person, start securing the drywall to the ceiling. Step 5. Now it is time to use some compound. With your drywall knife, put a good amount of compound along the seam and then remove the excess. Work on one seam at a time so the compound doesn’t start setting before you apply the tape. Step 6. Fold a strip of tape length wise and place it in the corner of the wall. Then apply a good amount of compound over the tape. Then wait for it to dry. Step 7. Before you can apply another layer of compound, you need to scrape off the excess. Once that is done then apply the next layer of compound. If you apply to much compound, you will have to sand it down. Then wait for the compound to dry. Step 8. Make sure you have good lighting in the room you are working in. That way you can see all the imperfections left behind. Now you can apply the last layer of compound. Once it is dry, you can sand down the spots that need it.
