The answer to this depends on if you are doing it yourself, or having someone else do it, and it also depends on the quality (and therefore cost) of the parts being used. And prices alway vary with your location.

If you do it yourself, you can probably replace one axle for under $100. You can buy new aftermarket CV axles with limited lifetime warrantees for under $70 each. You can get rebuilt axles with lesser warrantees for even less. However, if you use Ford axles, the cost will be $300-$400 each. You'll also need to replace fluid lost, and you should replace the axle seals to avoid having to do this all over again later just to replace a leaking seal.

And, if you take it to a dealership, it will probably cost between $500-$800 for parts and labor to replace one axle. Although it would seem logical that it would cost less to replace both sides at the same time, vs one at a time (on two separate occasions), most dealerships (and most shops) charge book labor for the job. So, you'll usually pay whatever the combination of the book labor is for both sides regardless if when it's done. So, unless they specifically tell you they will give you a price break for doing both at the same time, there's usually no real advantage of doing so unless both are bad. The only money you might save in doing both simply as a preventive measure, is the time lost to take the vehicle in a second time.

This can be a rather difficult repair as you have to partially disassemble the majority of the entire front suspension to remove the axle on each side being replaced. This is not a repair for a novice shade tree mechanic. However, a seasoned one should be able to handle it with a good manual and a little patience.

How do you replace the CV axle on Ford Focus?

Buy a good manual that covers the year of your Focus, read and understand it before you ever start. If you have specific questions after doing that, then research those question here, and on Focus forums on the internet. This is a repair the requires partial disassembly of the majority of your front suspension, in order to remove the axle. If you do it wrong, you'll have a lot more work to do than if you take the time to do it right.
