In "normal" driving conditions, it should be changed every 30,000 miles; if driven in "severe" conditions such as extreme hot or cold, or dusty or if used for towing, change every 15k. Or if you notice the fluid is brown, smells burned, or causes general problems with the transmission it's a good idea to change it.
