This very much depends on how they are used, what kind of vehicle they are on and what type of lining material (pads or shoes) were used last time to service them.

  • My winter car ( Oldsmobile ) goes about 60,000 km ( 40,000 Miles )between front brake changes
  • My Summer sports car gets a new set of front brakes about ever 8,000 kilometers ( 5,000 miles ) Due to the abusive use it gets.
  • My Pickup truck gets about 100,000 kilometers to a set of front pads and rotors

Most passenger cars will run 50,000 to 100,000 Kilometers.

If one brake wears out quicker than another you need to look for causes.

Interesting brake problem:I have seen in the last ten years or so an issue where the rear brakes still have life in them according to the measurement but they have become so "Glazed" they no longer contribute any real effort to braking causing the front brakes to wear much more quickly. This also increases stopping distance.

This is shown by front brake service at 90,000 (or whatever) then 150,000 then 180,000

So have the rear pads done when doing the front and save yourself danger and needless expense.

In 2004 Toyota Camry if I have not used hand brakes do I need to replace front and rear wheels brakes or just front wheel brakes?

Rear brakes do not have to be replaced too often. It's really hard to tell without looking at it. What you can do is to replace front brakes and test drive it, if you feel that your car brakes works just fine you do not need to replace rear brake shoes.

Why do you need front brakes?

The front brakes on any vehicle do most of the stopping. When you apply the brakes the weight shifts to the front of the vehicle. For this reason the front brakes are needed more than the rear. Try stopping a vehicle with just the hand brake which applies only the rear brakes.

How much will a brake job cost on a 1999 grand am?

The amount varies depending on how much work needed to be done. If you only need to replace the front break pads, it may only cost you $150-170. If you need the front pads and rotor/disks replace, it may cost you from $275-350. The rear break cost a little less than front brakes specially if you have drum brakes. Since you have front wheel drive, often rear brakes are okay and just need cleaning and adjustments.
