every 2 to 3 hours More detail: If the dog is still a puppy, then it needs to be taken out after every time it eats, drinks, sleeps and plays. These are things that stimulate a dog's urge to go, especially eating and drinking. If the dog is an adult dog, its size will determine the frequency. While a larger dog can go 6 - 8 hours, or overnight, a smaller dog will need to go more often, since they have a smaller bladder capacity. But even most smaller breeds can go through out the night with out having to be taken out. If, however, the dog is elderly or sick, then it will have to be taken out more often than it did when it was younger. By this time though, you should be able to know the signs when your dog needs to go out, and won't have to guess. But if ever in doubt, take him out instead of risking him having an accident inside, or being very uncomfortable in trying to hold it.

They usually have to go out every 6-8 hours. Overnight they will hold it as they sleep, but as soon as you get up you have to take him out.

Why did your dog pee in her crate?

Dogs generally won't do their business where they sleep unless they have absolutely no choice in the matter and are desperate. Before the dog is crated for the night, it should be given an opportunity to empty its bladder and its water bowl should be removed until the morning. If the dog seems to be doing this regularly, however, it could indicate a bladder infection or other problem out of the dog's control and it should be checked by a veterinarian. Again, under normal conditions, a dog will NOT urinate where it must sleep.
