Irregardless of anything else, a partial (30 percent) water change every week is a good idea, and certainly no less than every two weeks. If you have an undergravel filter, vacuuming a portion of the gravel during water changes ensures that no toxic debris will build up. Avoid vacuuming the entire bottom, as this will starve the bacteria which digest the waste products. If using a floss/charcoal filter, change the filter elements every two weeks, and vacuum the entire bottom once a month.

When do you put out hummingbird food?

It depends on where you live. Hummingbirds are flower feeders and consequently tend to migrate when flowers will be in bloom. So feeders should be put out in spring when flowers start blooming and should be kept out until the first frost. Its also important to change the liquid in feeders every week since it will begin to ferment.

Should hummingbird feeders be taken down since it is getting cold now?

Look to see if there are still hummingbirds using the feeders, if there are then these birds will require you to keep feeding them for as long as they come for food.

Should you leave algae for an algae eating fish if you're cleaning the tank?

Generally it is a good idea to leave some algae. However, if you want to clean the tank very thoroughly and you are worried about the amount of algae left for your bottom-feeders, the best option is to buy algae discs. They are fairly inexpensive and you can find them almost anywhere that sells fish. They're located next to the fish food and usually a few discs will keep your bottom-feeders from going hungry until algae naturally grows back.

Will a sea snail eat goldfish waste?

Snails are bottom feeders so they will usually eat debris at the bottom of a tank, as well as some algae if they come upon it. They can usually eat leftover flakes from regular fish feeding, but you may want to drop in a few pellets for them here and there to make sure that they have adequate food. If you have catfish or any other bottom feeders, they will eat these as well.

Are bird feeders good for the environment?

Bird feeders can attract a wide variety of birds to your yard and provide extra food for birds when natural resources are low. However, putting out feeders requires responsibility:Bird feeders and areas around feeders must be kept clean or they can cause spread of diseases. Cleaning and disinfecting (with bleach solution 1 part bleach to 9 parts water) should be done monthly. Old seed and waste matter on or under the feeder must removed.Feeders should be attached to windows or placed more than 30 feet from windows so when birds are frightened they have a chance to avoid the glass. If you notice a natural predator such as a Cooper's Hawk hanging around, remove the feeder for a few weeks. The predator will move on.Outdoor cats are a major problem, killing millions of wild birds annually. If you have outdoor cats, especially feral cats, in your neighborhood, then you should not put out bird feeders or hang them high out of reach of cats. Some people put no climb fences around their feeders. Most Birds visit feeders to supplement their diets and do not become completely dependent on feeders because they require a variety of foods to meet their dietary needs. However, if you keep feeders going through winter, do not cease filling feeders mid winter or during harsh weather as birds that are in the "habit" of visiting feeders, will have an easier time finding food.
