I just had this issue with my week old kitten that I have been hand-rearing. I got worried because he had been pooping a few times a day, a nice tooth-paste consistency which was perfect, but then didn't poop for 24 hours. When he finally pooped, the poop seemed backed up more and was much harder, though still soft by human poop standards. This was followed by some mild diarrhea. The next day, he still hadn't pooped again and his belly seemed full and slightly more firm than usual. I took him to the vet who said that this type of behavior is worrisome for a new kitten. Bowel problems can easily turn fatal. She expressed that a kitten should poop pretty consistently each time its bum is stimulated with a damp wipe (something the mother cat usually does with her tongue after each feeding, which should be every 2-3 hours). The kitten should perhaps not poop each time, but should go at least a few times a day. The vet ended up giving my kitty a shot of fluids, and sending me home with three more to administer over the next three days, hoping that hydrating him would help soften his stool.

As of yet, he still hasn't pooped again, but I'll continue to try every hour or so and hope that my little sweetie will hurry up and poop so I can feel better!

This really depends on the kitten's age and diet. Very young kittens can defecate several times a day, but older kittens that are fully weaned on solid food should usually only defecate once or twice a day, although this does differ between each kitten. Lots of stools, or smelly stools may indicate it is being fed poor quality food, or a food that does not agree with them.

Tiny baby kittens cannot defecate on their own - the mother will lick the kitten's genital area to stimulate the kitten to move its bowels.

If for some reason the mother is not available, you can replicate this by using a warm damp cloth. Kittens need to be toileted every hour or two around the clock until they can start to go for themselves at around 3-4 weeks old.

Yes, newborn kittens do deficate. But they only do so when the mother cat stimulates them through licking. If the kitten has been abandoned, you can stimulate them to go to the bathroom by very gently wiping their bottom with a damp, warm, clean wash cloth.
