17 years old- unfortunately, the law over here in England relating to the use of motor transport by under 17's is VERY strict. You cannot drive or ride ANY motor vehicle until you are 16, and then you are only allowed to drive small scooters and mopeds of 49cc and below, or farm tractors. From the age of 17 on, motorcycle riders (of ANY age) are restricted to a maximum capacity of 125cc until they have passed both parts of the two-part motorbike test, UNLESS they have a sidecar on the bike, in which case there is no restriction on capacity. You can also have what's called a provisional driving licence from 17, which allows you to drive a car only if there's a qualified driver sitting next to you and if you display red 'L' plates on the front and back of the vehicle (L for Learner), until you have passed your driving test. It is possible to pass your test at the age of 17, but in recent years the driving test has got a lot tougher, and most 17 year olds take at least 2 or 3 goes to get through it- by which time they've normally turned 18 anyway!

It all really depends on your kid. I was 10 when I got a 50cc bike. I was willing to ride it but still weary enough not to get crazy, so I would say 10 is a good age, give or take a few years.
