I believe that it depends on where you live and how old you are. I was 16 when I got my GED, so I had to take the classes first.. if I had been 18 I would have been able to go ahead and take the tests.

At this age, you would benefit by obtaining a GED. Take the evaluation test to see if you need to take classes in the five areas before taking the tests that you have to pass for the GED.

I think 16. If not then 17 for sure. In most cases, states require you to be at least 16 before taking the test. More importantly, you have to be out of school for at least 1 year before taking the test. Therefore, you cannot drop out of high school one day and go to take the test the following day. To apply to be a New York State Trooper, you must be at least 20 years old and no older than 35.
In Mexico it is not accepted and one needs to take their equivalent to the test instead, which can only be taken when you are at least 21 years old. The Mexican GED is called 'ceneval'.

Don't discount what you have learned in life! Go take the GED pre-test and find out what you know. Then, take any classes you need and then take the GED test. From there, you can take any college level classes you would like. Public school is not available after age 22.
