You have to be 16 in most US cities in order to have a job and earn wages - some places it is 18. This is just because of the legal issues involved if you should have an accident on the job and get hurt. Restaurants have lots of ways you could get hurt, from dropping a glass or plate and getting cut to getting splattered by hot grease in the kitchen all the way to cutting yourself with one of the knives when you are cutting up food! There are places where younger teens could get jobs, though. Check with your school counsellor, or call the local job search (check the yellow pages in your phone book or online)

You usually have to be at least 16, but it also depends on the restaurant you are working at. Does it sell liquor and will you be around it for periods of time? If it is more like a diner then usually 15 or 16. It also depends on whicch state you are in.
