It depends on what the cat was eating if you will get sick or not. If the cat ate some of your fresh mashed potatoes that is OK, but if the cat was eating rank sour day old unrefrigerated fish better purge it.

You introduce the new brand a spoonful at a time with the old cat food for approximately a week tapering off of the old food a very little bit at a time. This goes for both tinned or dry cat foods. This lets the cat's intestinal tract adjust to the new food.

Why do old cats stop eating?

Sometimes they become disoriented and cannot find their food. We have a 23 year old cat that has to be led to her food. She cannot see or hear well, but boy she sure can eat. When she was 19, she became terribly quiet and slept a lot. We thought she was going to die so I brought her a special treat of Chef Boyardee, she loved it. We realized that she was just terribly hungry and couldn't find her food. Eventually we began supplementing her food with a high calorie gel called Nutrical. This is available at your Vet. If the cat is relatively alert and stops eating, it can be a sign of cancer or another condition. A cat will not eat if it's temperature goes above 105. A normal cat's temperature is 100-103.

How To Switch Your Cat to a New Pet Food?

Most cat owners know that cats are not fans of variety--paradise to a cat involves predictable days of repetition. That preference includes eating the same food each day. Sometimes, though, it becomes necessary to switch your cat to a new food, whether for economic or other reasons. Your cat should accept this, if you make the change in a slow and gradual manner. Step 1: Choose a new food that’s as similar as possible to the old one. If you need to switch to a less expensive brand, choose one that’s close to the same texture and flavor. If you need to change from hard to soft food, stay in the same brand and flavor family. Step 2: Replace about a quarter of your cat’s old food with the new food. Do this at each meal. If the new food is the same texture as the old, you can simply mix the new and old together. If you’re changing from one texture to another, put a small amount of the new food in your cat’s dish beside a smaller-than-normal amount of the old food. Do this for about three days. Step 3: Assuming your cat is accepting the new food, increase the amount so that you’re giving him half and half new food and old food. Do this for about three days. If your cat is still struggling to accept the new food, don’t increase the amount until he is. Step 4: Change the amounts again so that about one-quarter of your cat’s food is the old variety and three-quarters of it is the new. Again, do this for three days. Step 5: Eliminate the old food from your cat’s diet. After this gradual approach, he should be willing to accept the new food. Be sure to watch your cat closely throughout this process for any changes. If your cat starts experiencing diarrhea or vomiting, stop giving him the new food and consult your veterinarian. Your cat could also express him displeasure about the new food through behavioral changes. If he starts scratching furniture or stops using his litter box, you should ask your vet for advice.
