Domestic sewing machines were manufactured in the upper north east of the US. Starting in the mid 1800's
They were well know for their hand tooled and crafted machines and cabinetry all done at their factory. Wood was logged and floated down the river directly to their factory.
The best way to determine the age of your machine is to look for machines of similar style. The sewing machine manufacturers almost all copied each other in appearance with the desire to capture the market. Machines were constantly given cosmetic face lifts to lure people into the notion they needed to update.
If your machine is a treadle look at the body style and look up info on that. The more curvy the body the older it tends to be. A bobbin loaded machine will be post 1900's. One that is electrified is definitely post 1900's usually post 1920's. The exception to that is a modified treadle or hand crank.
Domestic like many makers also made their machines under other names such as Sears or other department stores to capture that market as well.
If the finish looks like it is a rough granite it most likely is a magnesium body which will be lighter then it looks as far as weight. This was popular in the 1950's

The model R is rare and hard to find.some sold for $100 to $1000's
I purchased my machine in the early to mid 80's. It worked great for many years. Now, the reverse button is not working, so I can no longer use the machine.
Most appliance companies will mail you a hard copy for a small charge or the PDF file via email.
I think it is 1967 sold by Montgomery Ward.
I threw my cabinet out. It was junk! I got mine for FREE from a garage sale. There were no accessories. If yours has those and runs well someone might be willing to pay $25 maybe $50. Look on your local Craigslist to see what vintage machines are listed for. Keep in mind what people are asking is not necessary what they are getting. I just bought a Japan made White with solid cabinet for $12. She was asking $20. There were no accessories but it does work!
Happy Lock was sold at Montgomery Ward and made in Taiwan.
