Roman girls were allowed to get married at the age of 12, but boys had to wait till they were 14.This was because people believed that a girl should get married when she reached the age of puberty, as then they would be able to give birth and the Roman believed that she would make a better wife. You had to be married by about 15-16 or you would be punished.

Roman marriage was different than today. For the most part people married to have children. The average male age for marriage was 20-25 and for females 15 years old. It was illegal for girls to marry at 12. Because of the high Death Rate in child birth many men married more than once. The average number of children per family was 4-5 children.

Roman girls were legally allowed to marry at the age of 12 and boys at 14, but this was the legal age. In reality the girl was usually about 14 to 16 years of age and the men much older, mainly due to military service. It was not uncommon for a marriage to be made between say, a sixteen year old girl and a forty year old man.
