100% in my experience of using them for 16 years. I have installed dozens in my rental units and have used them in a space as small as a cargo van with absolutely no negative experiences.

These heaters are 99.9 efficient, which is why they don't need a vent.

But they do use oxygen from the room so each one is equipped with an over-sized pilot light which is fed by a controlled orifice. If the oxygen level in the room drops significantly the heater automatically (and purely mechanically - no electricity is required for the operation of these units) shuts the pilot light off, which shuts the heater down.

Is a direct vent water heater as good as a standard vent water heater?

a direct vent water heater is more fuel efficient (cost's less to operate). aside from that there isn't much difference, aside from not needing a double wall flue through the roof on a standard gas water heater.

How efficient are vent-less gas heaters?

Unbelievably efficient. I have been using them since 1995. I have purchased more than 20. They are 99.9 percent efficient, which is why they don't need a vent. A 15,000 BTU Unit (that has 3 plates) uses less than a dollar an hour worth of propane and probably something on the the order of 70 cents worth of natural gas per hour. You do have to select which gas source you intend to use before purchase. But you don't normally run the heater at full output. Once a room is heated you set the heater on low and then it uses just pennies per hour worth of fuel. I have owned and installed about 15 in the mobile homes and site built homes that I previously rented to tenants and I've purchased a number of portable units for camping.
