One example of exceeding a client's expectations would be: A customer service representative receives a phone call from a customer who has a problem that needs to be solved. Let's say an error on a bill they have received. The representative courteously tells the customer she will need to work with a billing person in her company to identify the problem and solve it. She apologizes that she is unable to make the correction herself but that she will personally work to resolve the problem. She tells the customer that this type of problem can sometimes take a couple of days to resolve and she will contact them in 48 hours to let them know the outcome, or the status if the problem is not yet resolved by then. (She has appropriately "set" the customer's expectations by giving a time frame and a promise of a follow up call). She immediately calls her billing department contact and they determine what the problem is and take the necessary corrective actions, resolving the customer's problem. Within 30 minutes of the customer's call, she is able to call the customer back and report the outcome of her research and how the problem has been corrected and what they can expect next. The customer should be very pleased since their expectation was a return call in 48 hours but instead the entire problem is properly resolved and they have been informed by the friendly representative in only 30 minutes. Expectations exceeded.

A smart business person will ALWAYS try to exceed a customer's expectation. Doing so will put you a rank above the competition, and you will gain added business as a result.

Here is an example: My wife is a real estate agent. She recently received a call from a client who was locked out of his home when he came home from a round of Golf. She told him to relax on the deck, while she drove 20 minutes to his home to unlock his house for him. He was amazed that she dropped what she was doing to run over to assist him - and his friend couldn't believe his realtor would go to that length for him.

By contrast, a few years ago my dry cleaner lost a shirt. I had been going to this business for several years, dropping off 4 or 5 shirts and a suit or two each week. When I pointed out that a shirt was missing (and the ticket had even been altered to reflect 4 shirts rather than 5), they refused to take any responsibility and said they did not lose the shirt.

That was the last time I dropped off cleaning at that business. For the cost of a $20 shirt they lost $3,000 of business over the past two years.

It depends on your service. But if a customer payed you to wash his car, and you washed his car, pumped up his tires, and gave him an air freshener, that would have exceeded what he wished you to do. Or, if a cafe gave you a free biscuit with your drink.
