If your cat is an outdoor cat, it probably wears down its nails naturally. However, an indoor cat does not and so it may be caught on loops of your carpet or elsewhere. Behaviorally, it may scratch furniture, unless you have a scratching post or one of those corrugated scratching boxes. Clip the nails carefully, so that you do not cut into the "quick" which may bleed. Your vet can also do this for you. Our cats seem to need it done about every six months.

You need proper lighting to do this. Cats claws, like fingernails, are somewhat translucent, but also opaque. When you look at the claw under bright light, you will see that inside the claw -- at the base of it, where claw meets paw -- is a little pink protrusion. Stay AWAY from the pink part inside the claw, as that is living tissue, and if you clip into it it will hurt REALLY badly, and the cat will probably never, ever, let you -- or anybody else -- clip his claws again.

The best way to cut your cat/kittens nails are to wait until they are sleepy or sleeping on your lap. Gently press on the pads of their paws and the claw will come out. Then with normal human nail clippers, trim the top WHITE part of the nail. DO NOT CUT THE PINK PART!! Cats have a nerve that runs along the root of the nail and if cut it will bleed for a long time and cause much pain to your kitty. So it is best to cut less than more. Speak calmly to your pet and keep them calm. As soon as they get feisty or wake up, STOP, they will scratch you! If your cat is an outdoor cat, don't worry about them not being able to defend themself because they use their back claws to defend. Good luck!

Some vets will clip the ends of a cat's claws as a way to cut down the damage they do when scratching. However, it is not necessary, and as cats don't like it done, it generally is not a good idea to try it at home.

Cat's claws grow throughout the cat's life, but periodically the outer layer is shed, revealing a new and sharp claw underneath.

How do you clip my cats nails?

Have a friend/Family member hold the cat, (I suggest the holder wear think rubber gloves!) while you hold the paw, then clip the nails. And if this cat is CRAZY, put something solid but something the cat can still breath through, this could possibly calm it.

How do you cut a cats nails?

You simply take cat nail clippers and clip it before the quick. The quick is the part on the nail that's pink. You want to make sure you don't cut this part, or it'll bleed, because usually a cats nail is white, so you can usually see a pink/red color on the nail. You would cut before the red/pick part(the quick).

How short should I cut my dogs nails?

You should clip your dogs nails only a little bit at a time. There is something called a "quick" in dog's nails. If you cut into the quick then the nail will start to bleed and it will have hurt the dog, to a point to that they dog won't let you clip their nails anymore. If you clip the nails a little bit say once a week, the quick will start to recede, making it safer to clip your dogs nails without hurting them.
