Common milkweed (Asclepias) is a large plant, often growing 6 feet or more in height, which is a crucial food source for the monarch butterfly (and others). A hybrid cultivar (A. tuberosa) is available from many online and mail-order sources, but this is not the native variety.

It represents the upper limit to a range beginning at 12 feet (3.66 meters) for the tallest known milkweed species, Calotropis gigantea, commonly known as giant milkweed, in its above-mentioned native distribution.
