To understand the beginnings of the Jews, you would have to turn to history and the Torah/Bible. While man descended from Adam and Eve, it wasn't until after the great flood, and after the destruction of the tower of Babel, that God chose Abram (later called by God - Abraham) to separate from his people and showed that he would become a great nation. To inherit the land of Canaan, which is Israel today.
From Abraham came two sons: Isaac and Ishmael. Noted as the two major points in religion. Isaac had a son Jacob, who was later named by God - Israel. Judah being the son of Jacob, and from which the name Judea comes. Later to be known as "Jews" in the English language.
Ishmael is noted for being the son of Abraham, and the beginnings of the religion known as Islam. Albeit that it did not exist until September 24, 622. Oddly, it was Abraham that prophesied over his two sons and noted that Ishmael (and his decendants) would always seek to have a sword to the throat of his brother.
So now you have the beginnings of the Jews, and the conflicts that you know today.
