It is less a matter of national origin than it is a matter of economic and educational class and English fluency. Other things being equal, those from the Middle East who look, act, and dress like Americans are treated like Americans. Those who dress in uncommon national costumes are usually treated either with exaggerated politeness or with distancing, depending on the upbringing and good manners of the American involved in the interaction.

The US is the top consumer of energy in the world. Back then in the 1970's, the US needed sources on where to find its energy. The Middle-East such as Saudi Arabia and Emirates had the oil at the time, and were oil-producing countries. The US needed to do business with these people, whether they wanted to or not.
