If you have to ask "How" to rebuild a steering gear box then you're probably NOT ready to tackle the job!! Not really an amateur project unless you're itching to learn the hard way!
To rebuild you do need a press and some specialized tools (advanced home shop type) and a manual. There are ball bearings (many of them... 30 or so) that need to be salvaged, cleaned and reinstalled properly, end plays and thrusts adjusted properly, etc... or you'll have problems later on (and steering is NOT where you want to have problems later on!)
Get a junker and tear it apart or install it while you tear apart your own and "learn by doing" and rebuild the beast. Get a Haynes manual covering generic steering or the factory/shop manual (not a Chilton or Haynes manual- but the real factory shop manual!) for your actual application, if possible and learn. If it works out ok then you in, otherwise run the junker salvage and buy a rebuilt/re-manufactured one from the parts store.

Well, have you actually done any sort of diagnosis? If there's no fluid leak visible, and there's fluid in the reservoir, then you have either a faulty power steering pump or gearbox. So then you disconnect the line from the pump to the gearbox and run a pressure test on it.. if that checks out, then it's probably your gearbox.
