You need to dial the access code for outgoing international calls from the UK first, which is 00. Then you dial the country code for the USA and Canada, which is 1.
Then you dial the full 10 digit national number.
For example:
If you wanted to dial the American number 718-330-1234 (which could alternatively be shown as 1-718-330-1234 or +1 718 330 1234) you would dial: 00 1 718 330 1234.

The United States. This is because America is usually referred to as the continents of North and South America. In some languages, people of the United States aren't even referred to as Americans for this reason (such as Spanish).
It's on the continent we call the United States of America. It is the continent that everyone else calls "North" America. Americans are hypocrites, and... Assuming you don't know where Canada is, I'll assume that you are one.
It's an abbreviation: U for United K for Kingdom. Just like U for United S for States.

I suppose you could call them two unions. One was the United States of America (the North). And the other was the Confederate States of America (the South). The term 'Union' is always understood to mean the North.
You are correct in saying that America is a continent (actually three: North America, Central America, and South America) and not a country. I guess since our country's name is The United States of America, it is just simpler to say America and call its citizens Americans. Someone used a term for US citizens that I thought was pretty short and simple: United Staters
North America and South America are continents. When someone says "America" all on its own, they usually are speaking of the country the United States of America; it is often called, the US, USA, or simply just America for short.
In North America, people typically refer to Autumn as "fall."
