On Vectra C 04 model, the steering pump is located inside the rear wheel arch, quite an easy job to do really however the pump if new will cost you around £450, after fitted the car must be taken to vauxhall dealers to have the steering calibrated and only this can be done with tech 2 software,only then will the stering wheel light go out on the display.

I would be surprised if the noise was actually coming from the power steering as the engine rotation which drives the steering pump is always the same, sounds like its more likely to be a gearbox issue
