Unfortunately, if your '97 is like the '98, which it should be. Then the wonderful GM engineers forgot to add a tranny dipstick, and called it a "Sealed Transmission." So if you don't have a red wet spot under your car, then you probably don't have a problem with low fluid. But since it's a '97, then it's probably time you changed the fluid/filter anyway. By the way, there's no drain plug either. Your drain plug is the pan, and it gets messy when you drain the fluid.
It takes 7 qts to fill it back up, and if the parts store tries to sell you a $30 gasket, then its the wrong one, I know from experience. It should cost you about $15 for a new gasket/filter kit.
Actually, its not that they forgot, its just that they wanted to be more difficult I guess. There is a plug on the side of the trans in which you check the fluid level like that of a differential(the fluid should be just dripping out the hole when the plug is removed).
All of the transmission fluid is inside the transmission. There is no external reserve.
A 2001 Pontiac Sunfire requires 1.8 quarts of DEXRON III fluid for the 5-speed manual transmission.
When changing the transmission fluid of any car, it is important to know how much fluid to put in. A 2001 Pontiac Sunfire takes 2.5-3 quarts of transmission fluid.
as far as i know you cant check the transmission fluid on a 2000 Pontiac sunfire. It uses dexcool automatic transmission fluid and very rarley needs to be changed, i have a manual shift and it never has to be changed. Actually the only way that you can change it is by having it flushed the same way you flush a radiator, it has to be sucked out by a machine.
Remove the transmission oil pan
There's no dipstick on a Sunfire that new. You need to add fluid at the transaxle itself. There's a plug in the side of the transaxle that needs to be removed to check or fill the fluid.
it doesnt have adip stick it has a bolt in the side of trans better take to dealer

The transmission dipstick on a 1994 Pontiac Sunfire is located on the left side of the engine. It connects to the transmission via a long tube which also allows for adding transmission fluid.
