Due to the recent outbreak of COVID-19 across the country, gig and freelance workers are now eligible to collect unemployment benefits.

As per the new guidelines, gig workers and freelancers are eligible for half their state's average weekly unemployment and an additional $600 a week.

Though currently most of the states are not prepared as yet to accept applications from these groups of workers. The states are have not received guidelines from the Department of Labor on how to go about the payment process.

It would take at least a week for state unemployment offices to get better prepared on how to go about filing applications.

If you would like to check your eligibility in these times you can use this simple calculator right here fileunemployment.org/coronavirus/

The eligibility norms for claiming benefits have been currently.

If you: 1) Lie about your employment status so that the UI agency believes you are completely unemployed; OR 2) Notify the UI agency that you are working freelance/part time but do not properly report all wages earned while collecting unemployment, then you are committing a crime (unemployment benefits fraud). Depending on what state you live in, you may: * have to repay benefits * be permanently or temporarily (years) disqualified from receiving unemployment benefits in the future * be fined * be arrested and jailed If you have made a mistake, contact your unemployment agency now to begin resolving the situation before it gets any worse.
