You can do it in afew ways, but first you need an auido recording program. If you wan't to record audio from outside your computer (eg. Instument plugged in to the Line In) you: 1. Plug in the device/instrament in to the line in of the computer and then select line in on your audio recording program. 2. Press record and play your insrtament or speek into your microphone ect. ---- If you wan't to record audio internally from your computer, you will need to select Wave out on your audio recordin progarm.

Go to the control panel and click on hardware, then sound.

Under the "Recording" tab, right click on the windows and check "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices". A stereo mix option should appear, make that your default recording device and you can then record exactly what you hear from your speakers from any sound recorder.

To record audio, whether music or vocal, you will need several vital components:

  • an audio source; an orator, a singer, a musical instrument, a folio artist (sound effect artist) or anything that makes an audible sound.
  • an input device that reacts to audio vibrations (waves), such as a microphone.
  • an analogue-to-digital (AD) encoder to convert the electrical analogue signals from the microphone into digital data that the computer can store.
  • audio recording software.
  • a digital-to-analogue (DA) encoder to convert digital audio back into analogue audio that you can hear.
  • a set of headphones to monitor the recording.

DA and AD converters are built-in to every sound-card. However the quality of the converters determines the quality of the encoding. For high-quality, professional encoding, it is recommended you purchase a high quality sound-card. But for most home-recording purposes, the built-in sound-card found on the majority of modern motherboards is more than sufficient.

The first thing to remember is that computers cannot record analogue signals to any degree of accuracy (this includes high-quality sound-cards). Digital recordings will inevitably result in a loss of detail -- it is unavoidable -- however those losses can be minimised by ensuring you record with the highest possible resolution.

That said, while analogue recordings do contain superior detail, the losses are so minimal that no-one can really tell the difference. In blind tests, the results are really no better or worse than chance (a 50/50 guess).

The Red book CD standard has determined that all audio be recorded at 44.1Khz with a bit-depth (resolution) of 16-bits per sample, per channel. Note that although the human ear is capable of detecting audio waves in the range of 20Hz to 20KHz, it has been proven that we need to sample at least twice as fast if we are to minimise the losses sufficiently. Thus 44.1KHz is the minimum for CD-quality audio. DVD audio has a minimum of 44.1KHz, but can be as high as 192KHz with a 24-bit depth.

Audio software varies from single-track recording (such as the Microsoft Windows Sound Recorder included with every Windows operating system), to multi-track recording software, including Cubase and Sonar, amongst others. Most multi-track recording software also includes a MIDI sequencer which can record MIDI sequences from MIDI-enabled equipment.

Whatever you use to record, the principal is no different to using a tape recorder. You hit the record button, record the performance, then stop recording. Most recorders will save the recording automatically (if a filename has been provided), but otherwise you simply save the recording as you would any other file. To maintain the highest quality, save the file in a non-compressed format (such as WAV) with the same sampling rate and bit-depth as was used to make the recording. This is the master recording.

To produce an MP3, you simply convert the WAV to MP3 using the audio software's Save As feature. Not all software can do this conversion by themselves so you may need a plugin, or a separate program that can convert between formats.

To make an audio CD, export the WAV file to a 44.1KHz 16-bit stereo WAV file (if it is not already in that format), and then use your CD-burning software to create an audio CD project.
