I was told by my vet that you have to remove the entire toe. My dog has a toenail that looks deformed and grows in weird. The vert said that unless it really bother my dog or if it looks infected or problematic to leave it alone and keep it trimmed. Hope this helps. M

Do you mean that the nail has grown around from her toe and has embedded into her paw? If so, you probably won't be able to get it out by yourself. It would be extremely painful for the dog for you to try. The best thing would be to take the dog to a vet. The vet will have the proper equipment to deal with it. The vet will also have the proper painkillers and numbing agents. Good luck.

You can remove the dewclaws, which is the little claw that sets up high inside of the front leg and sometimes in certain breeds, the hind legs. It should be done between the ages of 3 - 5 days. Otherwise it is a major surgery. Their regular claws or toenails should never be removed. You can clip/trim them and should. Get yourself a nail trimmer and have someone show you the proper way to clip them, such as your Veterinarian or a Groomer.

As long as you are careful not to cut the quick (the part that bleeds) then you can trim your dogs claws the same way you cut your fingernails. Any pet shop will be able to provide clippers designed for this purpose.
