In Firefox (as with most other Mac browsers) you access the Bookmarks menu by clicking on Bookmarks in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Select View then Toolbars from drop down and the remove the Favorites Bar menu

You can also add software that will put an icon in the menu bar. Unless their Mac is an exact clone of your Mac there is likely to be variations in the menu bar.

Right click in the menu bar (but not on a menu option). Turn off all the ticked items.
With Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) open the System Preferences. Select the Desktop and Screen Saver pane and then the Desktop tab. At the bottom is a tick box labelled Translucent Menu Bar.
