Obviously you have to determine what is leaking before this question can be answered. There are 2 coils (the evaporator and the condenser), a compressor, an accumulator and a variety of hoses that could be leaking.
If the system is still operating, you can try adding a special dye into the system that will show up under ultraviolet light. If that does not work then you will need to use a leak detector. They are vary expensive but can sometimes be rented from a tool rental company.
When you locate the leak you can then determine what needs to be done. Sometimes a fitting can be tightened but most often one of the parts or hoses need to be replaced. When you replace any component in an A/C system, you lose the freon. It is against the law to discharge the freon into the atmosphere. You have to recover the freon, which requires special equipment. When the part is replaced, you will have to evacuate the system before you can replace the freon. This also requires special equipment so you are probably better off having a shop do the work.
