Jeez! It's pretty easy especially if you have the manual. Undo the bolts at the front of the gas tank and loosen the bolt/nut at the back of the tank. Then you lift the tank on the bolt which allows it to pivot, and prop the tank up with the rod they give you; it's near the back fender under the seat which you have to remove before doing anything. Then unscrew all those darned screws holding the top of the air filter box, take out the old filter & drop in the new one. You may want to pop in a piece of window screen under the filter to keep mice out of the air filter over the winter. Found out the hard way!! Scheduled interval is every 16K miles.
As in all engines the air cleaner prevents dirt and debris from damaging the engine.
