Access to the fuel tank is easier by removing the bed of the truck, if a shop lift or multiple people are available. To do it by yourself follow these steps:
Drain the tank or make sure it is next to empty. Remove pressure from the system. Caution: if there is pressure in the system gasoline spay can cause fire and severe harm to your face!
Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Disconnect the filler hose and return line to the filler. Support the tank. Disconnect both supports straps. The rear is held with a bolt and the front is held by a nut. Remove the support bracket which is attached to the frame via four nuts. Push the tank inwards so that its hangs loose. Jack up the drivers side of the truck until the pressure line, return line and wiring harness are visable. Remove the bolt holding the harness and ground wire to the frame (13mm). Disconnect wiring harness. Disconnect small vent line. Disconnect both pressure and vent lines, taking note of thier positions. The tank should now be removed freely.
The assembly is held in by a retaining ring. Tap it counterclockwise with a screwdriver and hammer until the assembly is freed.
Follow installation directions included with the new pump.
Be sure to test the new pump assembly before reinstalling in the tank. (Simply plug the wiring harness in and make sure the ground cable is grounded to the frame and turn the ignition to "on." The pump should cycle for 15 seconds. Its not recommended to run a dry fuel pump, so just make sure it is cycling properly and move on.
Install fuel pump assembly in the tank. Replace the tank in the in the opposite order.
I have a 2000, 4 Cyl, Chevy S-10, I had to replace the fuel pump about 6 months ago. The fuel pump is located inside of the fuel tank. You'll have to lower the fuel tank to get the fuel pump out.
Check the fuse, check the relay, check the wiring especially at the fuel pump. If all that checks good, replace the pump.
$300 to $500
It has an electric fuel pump inside of the fuel tank.

How do you change the fuel pump on a 2003 Chevy Malibu?
NO. it does not.
My boyfriend just replaced his fuel pump on his 2003 Chevy s10. I know all the newer models fuel pumps are in the gas tank. He had to drop the tank to replace it. Sucks but that's where it is. I have no idea where the reset is for it though.
The fuel pump is kaput.
It's inside the fuel tank.
There is no fuel pump reset button on that vehicle.
