on a vacuum type booster there is usually a vacuum leak. either on the rubber line that runs from the booster to the engine, or a hole in the diaphragm inside the booster. the rubber line is easy and inexpensive to replace so i would check it first. if you have a hole in the diaphragm the only way to fix it is to replace the booster.
This is one job best left to the experts. If you separate the two halves of a booster you will release a large spring which will do serious harm to yourself and or anybody standing nearby. These units can be replaced with a rebuilt or new unit. Ask your local auto parts store.
If you step on the brake pedal and you here a hiss or the engine idle speed changes, the booster is going bad. If the booster is shot, the brake pedal will be hard with no power assist.
problem could be caused by, a bad return spring on brake pedal, a bad brake booster, a bad vacuum line to booster, a bad master cylander, or worn out brake linings on wheels
Sounds like the power brake booster is bad.
Probably have a defective power brake booster or the vacuum supply to the booster is restricted or leaking.
The 1989 Lincoln Continental brake booster is located on the firewall in the engine compartment. The brake booster will be on the drivers side of the firewall.
Take the master cylinder off and then on the inside of the firewall where the rod from the brake pedal goes through, there should be 4 nuts holding the booster on.
A bad brake booster will cause a vacuum leak, result in poor braking, and even poor engine performance. The brake booster has a large diaphragm which can fail and leak.
Start the engine and then push the brake pedal down. If it is soft and easy to push then the booster is okay. If booster is BAD the brake pedal would be hard to push.
