Headlights not working
A 1976 beetle (super or standard) is a Type I.
Under the rear seat
Should be a 12 volt battery.

You turned them off. The fuse has blown
Pull out on the headlight switch to turn on the fog lights.
If this question isn't allready answered, I have a 2001 VW Beetle, there might be a dial type switch on the left of the dash for the lights, turn lights on and pull switch out to turn on fog lights.
On the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Pull out for lights.
It has macpherson struts in the front and torsion springs at the rear.
Check your voltage regulator and alternator. You're getting enough juice to either run the engine or the lights but not both.
one of them has a problem.
Not exactly sure but it might be a right hand drive 1976.
