When trying to unlock your 97 grand am by using a slim jim the first thing you want to decide is, do your locks go up and down or back and forth. Once you find the lock rod , move the slim jim in the direction your locks move.

with the key... or a slim Jim Key is not working at the door
Probably: Slim Jims never seem to lose their ability to open any car door, even with the advances in locking devices.
No. Once, I locked my keys in the car and the slim Jim did not work. The AAA guy ended up using a hanger-like thing to manually open the door. Another time the AAA guy used some sort of door "jimmy" (sorry, I don't know the name of the tool he used), which took <5 seconds.
To use a Slim Jim on a Grand Am, insert it between the frame of the car and the window. Next, slide it to where the door lock is located.
If it's electric you have to "pop" it from the middle, NOT from where the key lock is. CAUTION....CAUTIONOne needs to be VERY Careful about USING A slim Jim on some of the Later model cars (not sure if Buick falls in this category) which have air bags in the door panels. I'm told by the local police department that they will no longer do this to unlock a car. Another police department had a policeman killed when he inserted a slim Jim into a car door and hit the air bag mechanisim. The air bag exploded forcing the slim Jim upward through the neck and lower throat of the police officer....KILLING HIM.

Don't use a slim Jim...You open a coat hanger and tighten the hook to be a little more closed, then you use wood wedges or a flat tool to pry the door open enough to let the hook through into the car. If you want you can use the slim Jim to help get the hook past the weather stripping, or you can just save the slim Jim to use on a different car that is not slim Jim resistant. Pull to get a broad curve in the wire and use it to pull the door handle open. Not easy takes about 20 minutes of steady effort.

If you are referring to a Slim Jim lock pick and trying to break into someone else's Ford Ranger Edge, then we can't help you because this is illegal.
You either have to find someone who has a slim Jim or a window tool to manually open your door. Or you can try and take off the interior door panel and use a screwdriver/prybar on the lever for the door latch to unlock it. If you try to do that you will more than likely destroy your interior door panel. So I would suggest that you find someone who can open it for you with the slim Jim. I have this problem on my car but, it's not that high on my list of things to fix as of right now.
