Canada became part of the British Empire when Britain conquered New France during the seven years war. It contained a colony named Canada, which eventually (through many name changes and restructurings) became the Province of Canada, which later confederated with neighbouring British (formerly French) colonies to become modern day Canada.
Cut a long story short, they had a war with France called the Seven Years' War and won and France gave Britain what the had of Canada.
The British Empire took complete control of Canada (from France) in 1763, and it became independent (part of the British Commonwealth) in 1867.
