John Cabot was the first Englishman to explore the area known today as Delaware in 1497. Henry Hudson and fellow Dutch explorers were to first to occupy the land. Several people, including William Penn and the Duke of York claimed legal ownership and the land was held as part of Pennsylvania from 1682-1776.
