Islam was introduced into East Africa through interactions between Arab Merchants and merchants from coastal Africa who exchanged goods over the Indian ocean. In this way Islam arrived via diffusion. Given the technological advantages that Arabs had, such as a functioning literary system, there became a high-level exchange. This resulted in leaders in East Africa adopting Islam as their official religion and this led to pressure from the civilians in these states to convert.
