Japan was willing to end the war in the pacific as early as spring 1945, but only if they kept all the territory they had captured and the Allies return to Japan many of the islands the Allies had already won back. Baring that Japan was willing to fight (whether they could have is a different issue) until at least 1955 on the assumption that the "soft" US would get tired of the war and quit, allowing Japan to do anything they wanted and have anything they wanted in the pacific.
