Generally speaking both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union under Stalin were dictatorships that permitted no free speech or other political parties to exist. In Germany only the Nazi Party was legal and under Stalin only the Communist Party under the rule of Stalin was allowed.

When Adolph Hitler came to power in Germany, he soon did away with any other political party, including the German Communist Party. He made a pact with the German military leaders and they supported his position as dictator, and the Nazi Party leader. Under Hitler, Jewish people were soon deprived of their rights and they began to be shipped to concentration camps. The Holocaust would begin as early as 1939. Although Hitler was a fascist dictator, as was Mussolini in Italy, Hitler allowed for private property and was clever enough to keep the German industrialists in power as they could and did build the German economy and its war machine. It was clear, however, that at any time, Hitler could have the industrialists placed in concentration camps if 1) they became anti-Nazi 2) they did not meet production quotas ) they did not make "innovations" designed to support the economy and the war machine. His counterpart in tyranny, Joseph Stalin in the USSR, wielded the same dreadful powers as did Hitler. He starved the Kulaks, and the difference was he nationalized Soviet industries. As with Hitler, Stalin purged loyal communists as Hitler purged radical Nazi's. The Nazi radicals had to be killed in order to gain the support of the German army. In the USSR, Stalin had so much power he did not need to make deals with anyone.

Under both dictators, millions of people died. The one main difference was that Stalin killed more Russians, while Hitler killed more "foreigners" in a manner of speaking.

Another similarity was both men were "nobodies" that came to power by scheming and lying.
