In 1624, a Dutch trading company founded the colony of New Netherlands which was located between two British settlements known as Virginia and Plymouth. In 1664 the British seized New Netherlands. The King, Charles I, granted the colony to his brother, the Duke of York, as a Proprietary Colony. The English colonists demanded some kind of representative government. A colonial assembly was elected in 1683. The colony was renamed and New York became a Royal Colony when the Duke of York became King James II in 1685. The colonies in North and South America were governed by officials (governors) appointed by the European countries that claimed American territories as colonies. Most of these countries gained independence by revolutionary combat, but some like Canada followed peaceful means.

What did the Mayflower Compact do to change the us?

Since Plymouth colony was an early colony (1620) the US didn't exist in that time so it didn't change anything as far as the country is concerned, but what it did was set a format for the future. It laid out the basic ideas of how a society/government should run and that people had a say in that governance. This was a new idea for the time since the world was managed by kings/queens and the common man usually had no say in his government. The Pilgrims were not a true Democratic society, but they did try to give the male land holding members of the colony a means to have a say in the daily government of the colony.
