We do not know what year Laozi (Lao Tzu) died. In fact we do not even know what century he lived in. There are really no contemporary historical records of Laozi, and there is nothing in his work that dates it accurately.
There are numerous writings on and legends of Laozi. In some he was a contemporary of Confucius, who is held to have lived from about 551 to about 479 BC. There is a legend that he taught or otherwise influenced Buddha, who is held to have lived between about 563 to about 483 BC. He is also said in some writings to have been a historian for Duke Zian of Qin, who reigned from 384 to 362 BC.
The exact date of Lao Tzu's birth is unclear, but it is said to be about 604 B.C.
