The Civil War ended because parliament won by Oliver Cromwells new model army.

The Civil War ended because Charles I tried to join the Scots army and defeat the Roundheads but the Scots give him back to the Roundheads. But Oliver Cromwell was boring so the Scots tried to get Charles I back to over power Oliver Cromwell. So another battle happens and Cromwell wins and Charles I head get chopped off.

The English Civil War was a war of power between the up and coming merchant classes (Parliamentarians) that had developed through sea trade, and an increase in northern European population, since the late Medieval period and an entrenched Monarchy of Charles Stuart (Charles I) and their followers (IRoyalists) who would not shift on giving power to the merchants.

Added to this, since 1530 and the Protestant split with the Catholics, there was a vicious on-going religious war going on for the religious heart of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland - as well as all over Europe.

Most Parliamentarians were Protestant. The Royalists were mostly Catholic, and there was no love lost.

For various reasons Charles sought to cancel Parliament a number of times during his reign, and it gradually led to radicalise the Parliamentarians into action.

Fighting started and the Royalists had the upper hand, but they could not finish the war and slowly the Parliamentarians fought back with their New Model Army until they were in control of most of the country and the war was won. The Royalists had lost.

In London, the victorious Parliamentarians did not know what to do with Charles but over some days they decided to try him for treason to his subjects. He was tried, found guilty and executed. The first Regicide in British history.

Oliver Cromwell, a prominent puritan, a captain of the Parliamentary cavalry who had risen to command the army, became "Lord Protector" of England, Wales and after much debate, he effectively became the King, sometimes cancelling Parliaments as Charles had done.

Cromwell took his puritan message to Scotland and Ireland, killing anyone who got in his way. England became a state of no music, no festivals, no colour.

Cromwell died in 1658 and his son was not able to take power as his father had done. Fearful of another civil war, the parliamentarians actually offered Charles II, Charles I's son, the throne, and a Stuart was returned to the throne of England in 1660.

The Civil War can be summarized as the first stage of parliamentary forces, the merchant classes of Britain, actively taking over as rulers from the Monarchy.

Fast forward two hundred years and by the time of Queen Victoria, Parliament was virtually king in Britain, with a constitutional monarch rubber stamping laws made by the people.

Depends on which war. The majority ended when either a king died (such as King John) or when Parliament took London.
