Officially, the United States entered World War I on the pretext of the German Empire violating the principle of neutrality by sinking American merchant ships.

In reality, anti-German sentiment (along with pro-British sympathies) were already running quite high. Such feelings were generated after news of German war attrocities committed in Europe reached the United States, and was further inflamed by the infamous Zimmermann Telegram. The telegram, intercepted and decoded by the United Kingdom, was a secret offer made by Imperial German authorities to the Mexican government, promising to pay and aid Mexico if it declared war on the US.

By the time Congress declared war against the Central Powers, there was already overwhelming public support.
