The Roman Republic and the Athenian governments were only similar in a few ways. For instance, the Athenian government did not last as long as the Roman Republic. One of the ways in which they were similar was that the people were controlled by the wealthy, just as they are today. Most of this wealth was based on land ownership. Besides the wealthy ruling classes, the two governments were very different.

The ancient Roman republic and my government,( which is the government of the United States of America), are similiar in only one aspect and that is that they were/are both republics which means that the officials are elected by the people (voters) to act for them. Otherwise, there is very little similarity, even though some try to twist the facts of both forms of government to fit each other. For example, the U. S. has two bodies of elected officials, the senators and the representatives, while the Romans had five. The duties of the U. S. officials are general while the Roman officials had specific duties, the system of checks and balances are different as are the terms of office. Plus, the government of the U.S. is loosely a dual government as we have in addition to the federal government, the state governments which the Romans never had. Yes, the Romans had provinces, but the governors were appointed and only a very few cities were allowed to elect a town consul. Although the Roman republic planted the seeds of our government by pioneering customs and rights that we follow, the actual working of the two governments is/was very different.
